the o'jays recorded a version of this track for their back stabbers album released in 1972
and even george clinton recorded a version for an album called a soulful tale of two cities, where mfsb and the funk brothers re-recorded classic philly and motown hits

fela - the best of the black president

Photobucket

The impact of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s music in Africa – and worldwide – cannot be overstated. Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, he was Africa’s musical genius, the creator of Afrobeat – a genre combining traditional African highlife, jazz, James Brown funk grooves and latin rhythms into a unique toxic mix that is wholly his own – and a revolutionary. Fela’s politically inflammatory songs laid bare the corruption, violence, and greed of the ruling regimes across the Continent and world. Arrested over a hundred times by the Nigerian government, ultimately 1000 soldiers invaded and destroyed the Kalakuta Republic – Fela’s living and performing compound that he shared with his 27 wives and his mother – sending nearly all of the inhabitants to the hospital, or worse. Despite the death of his own mother after the siege, Fela never stopped fighting the powers of imperialism, colonialism and racism with – as the legendary Fela Kuti put it – music as his weapon.

The Best of the Black President compiles thirteen of the most popular Fela compositions spanning work from all facets of his career with his bands Nigerian 70, Africa 70 and Egypt 80.

With deluxe editions of The Best Of The Black President comes a 40 minute DVD, narrated by Sahr Ngaujah, interviews with Carlos Moore & Bill T jones, recorded concert footage, and excerpts from various Fela Kuti documentaries, including Music Is The Weapon.

black dynamite

Photobucket

When “The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor, Black Dynamite is the one hero willing to fight all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

The score: written, composed, and performed entirely by the multi-talented Adrian Younge. Armed with an arsenal of vintage equipment and instruments, Younge recorded the album in his fully analog home studio by night, while spending his days editing the film. Inspired by the great Blaxploitation soundtracks of the 1970s, Younge has crafted a singular vision for his debut on Wax Poetics Records.

The soundtrack: Music supervisor David Hollander handpicked each track and cue from the vast reservoir of 1970s British library music, originally created for film and television.

Black Dynamite, starring Michael Jai White, was released nationwide on October 16, 2009. Not one but two full albums, the Original Motion Picture Score and the Motion Picture Soundtrack were released on vinyl, cd, and mp3 on waxpoetics records

chris read presents... "the little brother show" (remix e.p)

Photobucket

Ever since putting out the Diary Volume 1.5 remixtape earlier this year, I've been wanting to do another remix project with a more current feel. Whilst there's been something of a trend for producers remixing entire albums in the past few years, the truth is that there's a very small number of modern hip hop acts who genuinely inspire me, let alone ones that have published acapella albums. Little Brother on the other hand impress me consistently and are one of the few contemporary hip hop acts who I always check for. So I gathered together the limited acapellas that I have obtained over the years and used them (along with a few instrumental skits) to produce this 9 track remix EP.
Much like Diary Volume 1.5, I've tried to keep the style of beats appropriate to the age the original tracks, although it's all post-2003 material so in truth anything goes. The most recent tracks are a pretty accurate reflection of where my beat making sits right now.
I think it's probably pretty clear from what I've said already, but for the avoidance of doubt, I should probably add that this is not an official Little Brother mixtape or release. It was born simply out of my search for some quality vocals to put together a coherent sounding EP and perhaps more importantly my being a fan of Little Brother. I sincerely hope it's received that way.
Anyway, enough from me - I hope you enjoy the show!

lee dorsey - four corners

Photobucket

lee dorsey's first shot at success came in 1961 when his first release called 'ya ya' went to number seven on the billboard hot 100.
he was born in new orleans, louisiana in 1924, served in the united states navy and started boxing in the 1950's. after meeting allen toussaint at a party he was signed to the fury record label in 1960, but soon after the label folded and lee went back to his car repair business.
his most successful release was 'working in the coal mine' released in 1966 on amy. it was his second and last top ten song. in 1970 dorsey and toussaint collaborated on an album entitled 'yes we can'. the title song was dorsey's last singles charts entry. it became a hit for the pointer sisters under the title, 'yes we can can'.
although there are many great lee dorsey/allen toussaint collaborations like 'get out of my life, woman' released in 1966 or 'everything i go gonna be funky (from now on)' released in 1969, one of my favourites is 'four corners', released as a 45 only on amy records in 1968.
lee dorsey died in new orleans in 1986, at the age of 61.

joy jones - godchild

Photobucket

Growing up, Joy Jones sang in church and later nurtured an interest in spoken word and song writing. After graduating, she moved to London and was moved by the fact so many people were making a living from their creativity.
While living in London she started working with Bugz in the Attic and was mentored by Daz-I-Kue which gave her many of the skills that she used to sculpt her debut full length, Godchild, now available on Future Soul Records.
Afro-beat lullabies, future jazz/soul, protest songs and electronic hymns – expect all of this and more from the Joy Jones album so be prepared to have your ears and mind opened to new experiences!
This is what the press release tells us, and that's what you'll get by buying and listening this album.
An album full of beautiful words and rhythms which capture the listener (=you), as long as he's willing to be guided into Joy Jones' world.
The album doesn't suffer from the fact that she has worked with an array of producers, mainly because of the fact that the album was mixed by Daz-I-Kue and because Joy Jones did a great job in finding producers who share her artistic vision.

You can listen to some of the tracks on this site.

robert glasper - double-booked

Photobucket

from the first note you hear you know this is a blue note recording, the sound, the vibe, everything
robert glasper's latest album is called double-booked because it combines two distinct but interwoven concepts
the 32 year old houston native shows his versatility by combining the acoustic side of his trio with the electric, hip hop orientated robert glasper experiment, all on one album
the first 6 tracks feature bassist vicente archer and chris dave on drums, who plays in robert glasper's experiment band as well
one of the highlights is the trio's great version of thelonious monk's think of one, with a quote of ahmad jamal's swahililand at the end of the track
after 4eva, a live excerpt featuring mos def, butterfly leads us into the experimental part of the record
the track is originally from herbie hancock's 1974 landmark album called thrust and j dilla's f--- the police beat serves as a rhythmic foundation
robert glasper worked on numerous albums including kanye west's late registration, me'shell ndegeocello's the world has made me the man of my dreams and bilal's excellent 1st born second album
the last two tracks on double-booked which feature bilal (on all matter and open mind) are the perfect ending to a great album which will stay in your record player for a long time

double-booked is set to be released on blue note records on august 25 2009

the dapps featuring alfred ellis - the rabbit got the gun

Photobucket

alfred 'pee wee' ellis was a core member of james brown's backing band in the 60's, playing on classic tracks like cold sweat and say it loud (i'm black and i'm proud)
the dapps was probably just another name for a roster of musicians, who played and recorded together during this period
they released one other 45 called bringing up the guitar which was basically a saxophone version of the cold sweat groove

timber has a reputation as being one of the most exciting & entertaining DJs on the planet, a reputation founded on the principles of showmanship he learnt in his native Northern Ireland from the legendary b-boy crew “Belfast City Breakers”. The “One Man Army”, half DJ, half B-Boy, fully entertaining, self proclaimed “Fresh Prince Of Belfast” has a reputation as one of the hardest working DJs on the b-boy scene, always finding undiscovered gems & cutting them up alongside classic jams with sizeable finesse maintaining the real essence of what break DJing is all about.

Between 2001-2008 Timber lived in Manchester, England where he further honed and enhanced his skills becoming one of the finest B-Boys DJs in the UK, Europe and now undisputably the World. chris read - michael jackson: the legacy

Photobucket

I know what you're thinking, the last thing world needs right now is yet another Michael Jackson tribute mixtape? Believe me, I'm pretty much of the same opinion and I didn't take the decision to do this lightly, but the flood of (in too many cases) pretty half baked tribute mixes, radio shows, podcasts over the past week kind of got under my skin. It seemed almost as though people were putting more effort into being the first to get something out than they were into a making decent job of it. I'm of the view that if you're going to mark somebody's life's work, the least you can do is pay some respect by putting some proper work into it.

So that's what I did. Just over a week after Michael's passing, I'm pleased to present what I've (humbly) called THE LEGACY: World's Greatest Jackson Tribute Mix! - 60 minutes, 45 tracks, featuring a selection of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5's original works, edits, acapellas and demos accompanied by records that have sampled them, cover versions, tributes and remixes from the likes of Dwele, Dilla, DJ Spinna and Ian Brown amongst others. All that laced with original interviews and some heavy edits. It's been a labour of love, but I'm feeling like it was worth it.

I know that in the internet world news grows old fast, but it's only a little more than a week since we lost the world's most famous entertainer, one of the greatest to ever do it, so please take a moment to check out the mix. I hope you enjoy.

self says - something out of nothing

Photobucket

Introducing writer, hip-hop vocalist, and producer Self Says also known as Charles A. Vann to family, friends, and imaginary girlfriends. A product of Michigan's blue-collar capitol, Lansing, he was raised on steady diet of his father’s records and video games. He did not literally eat his father’s records because that would reflect bad parenting, but he did learn a lot about life from Mario and Luigi’s quest to save the princess. In a household where rap was somewhat forbidden well forbidden to the ears young boy, the beats and rhymes still found a way to Charles' ears.
“I looked up to my older cousins and uncles and they all listened to rap. I remember seeing tapes, EPMD 12" sleeves on their walls watching Yo! MTV Raps and I knew my mom didn’t approve but I couldn't get enough.” As he grew older SelfSays went from listening to the music, to trying his hand at writing. It is up for debate as to whether or not he was any good at in the beginning, but hey even rap has learning curve.

Graduation not only marked the end of high school but an introduction into Michigan’s hip-hop scene. Here he earned his perquisite stripes through the open mic and battle scenes. Progressing from writing to actually recording, this period produced a flurry of songs. Well not so much songs as some are partial creations, experiments still probably floating out there on the internets somewhere. Some were even heard by fellow artists and DJ’s like I Heart Lung on Asthmatic Kitty and Lawless Element, who enlisted the rookie to appear on their projects.
Some 9 years later marks a second graduation; from recording to releasing as SelfSays debut EP Something out of Nothing is available for free download in conjunction with myspace.com/trueradiopodcast. This record blends hip-hop’s roots with futuristic twist. Insights on maturity and wishful thinking are set to a soundtrack of created by some the most promising up-and-coming beatsmiths of the moment, featuring Samiyam, Bullion, Knowledge and more. So check out what Self says because ...well, he says things.

These are mainly colombian and venezuelan artists, some from Peru, others from Puerto Rico. Listening to some of these tracks you can hear the big influence Fela Kuti had on the latin community back in the days. While "Let's start" was a huge hit in Venezuela, inspiring bands like Phirpo y sus Caribes and Joselo, "Shakara" was massive in Colombia and was covered by artists such as Lizandro Meza, la Cumbia Moderna de Soledad and Wganda Kenya. The track by Abelardo CarbonÚ, featured in the mix, is another great example of the african roots you can hear very frequently in certain latin music.
Another big influence in these tracks is the afro-american music. Maybe the best known example of the fusion between R&B and latin dance music is what we call boogaloo. Here we have some hybrids where the line between these two styles is more blurred and can't be defined easily. Call them latin funk, latin soul, whatever you want. I can only tell you this is latin music at its best!
All these records turned up during one of my digging trips in South America. Since i've been more concentrated on the folkloric stuffs lately, i must confess i had some difficulties with finding a good number of quality funky tunes to make a new mix. But after a few months searching for the right stuffs, i finally found some really interesting tunes, and some of them were totally unknown to me.
I really hope you will enjoy the selection!

Cheers

dj ian head - june 2009 mixtape: summer fusion

Photobucket

dj ian head is back with one of his wonderful monthly mixtapes
if you like what you hear, you should check out everyday beats where you can find loads of mixes, free beat tapes and other free downloads
here's what ian has to say:

There's the back cover of a Ramsey Lewis record that kinda symbolizes fusion for me. It's one of the first records I ever dug up. It has the whole crew of musicians, chillin, rockin various funky styles of clothing. One dude though - he's rockin these sunglasses with an extra lense in the middle - a lense, possibly, for the metaphysical "Third Eye." It's that kinda vibe - mystical, funky, political, and just plain out there - that's some fusion ish. In that spirit, I play Roy Ayer's "The Third Eye" on this mix.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what "fusion" is. There's jazz fusion, rock fusion, disco fusion - obviously, we're talkin bout the fusing of different sounds, styles, genres, ideas, etc. But did it start in 1977 or 1982? Did certain artists pointedly try making fusion music, or did it just come out sounding that way? Maybe some musical scholar can school me in all this, but to me fusion is just that certain fuzzy, funky, borderline cheesy sound that it seems artists from all genres tried out at one time or another, usually in the late 70s and early 80s. Sometimes it worked - a lot of the time, it really didn't. Or at least, for me it doesn't - but some of it might have been the hottest ish out in 1979. I just wouldn't know, I was only one year old.

One thing fusion has blessed hiphop with though is some FUNKY ASS SAMPLES. There's some deep, deep grooves in some of these records. Basslines, choruses of voices, hard drums, funky Rhodes pianos. The key is finding these grooves, and the problem is avoiding the points where the sappy saxophone or harsh guitar suddenly make you think of a bad love scene in an 80s Chuck Norris film. Other times, however, the groove might ride out like a sunny day cruisin with the windows down, some west coast type chillin.

I tried to put together a mix of both short breaks and longer selections. I'm not sure if all of this qualifies as "fusion" technically speaking, but to me it has that abstract, funky quality that you don't find earlier in the 70s, when shit seemed more raw-sounding, or later in the 80s, when it got all Jimmy-Jamm'd out with electro drums and basslines (don't take that as a dis, I'm just describin sounds here - I love me some Rhythm Nation).

These aren't the rarest of records, but on this one, I can't really reveal the selections. These are some obscure-ish, funky samples - and yeah, they're samples. Like, I might sample them. Or others already did. So just vibe out. It's mostly jazz-related musicians, and many who recorded on Blue Note, which put out a lot of great fusion-ish records in the 70s.

Hope you enjoy!

chris read and danny delta - game on

Photobucket

my friend chris read (together with danny delta) had the opportunity to put together this mixtape for adidas
here's what he has to say about the project...

Putting together mixtapes for the love of music is one thing, but being asked to put one together for one of your preferred sneaker brands is kind of a treat. So when Danny Delta and I were asked to put together this CD for Adidas Originals' summer 2009 season launch, we happily obliged. The only theme requirements were the title, "Game On", and the fact that the CD will promote the summer range so what we came up with was a vaguely summer themed selection tied together with a selection of 'game' related tracks and adidas references. There's a smattering of hip hop leading into some jazzier beats type stuff including some interesting edits of classic tunes from the likes of Donald Byrd, Franki Valli and Jean Knight amongst others. Put together and out the door in the mere three days we were given, it's perfect summer barbecue soundtrack business!

alejandro - la colmena de humo

Photobucket

after his n°1 record post not long ago, here's alejandro's first guest mix for the this is tomorrow blog
a great selection all the way, just like the kind of stuff he presents on his new blog called la colmena de humo
here's what alejandro has to say about the mix...

A collection like this one or any other should be like one of those old Victorian Doll Houses that is filled with little doors and every room is different. You can see them in section with all the colored wall papers and little beds. Secret compartments. My sister used to have a modern version where a dragon would jump under a stair. A separate world and an invitation. Hopefully in this collection of rooms, you will be able to find a corridor or a closet where you haven’t been before. But beyond all this bla, bla, what’s at the core is just a bunch of cool records!
Enjoy this (mostly) instrumental laid back excursion...

Intro “ I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe”
1- B.T Express - Do You Like It? (Scepter)
From their first LP a relentless marathon.
2-Willie Mitchell - Teenie’s Dream (Hi)
A side not all that well known of the great “Pop”. Sweet guitar work from Mabon “Teenie” Hodges (hence the name).
3- Banda Nueva - Rumba#1 (Bambuco)
Lost 70’s band from my Hometwon of Bogotá, Colombia. Heavy on the Hammond. Nice...
4- Seven Seas - Pat’s Jam (Glades)
Can’t get enough of that Miami Funk lazy-bass-driving-head-nodding grooves. You can hear them swetin’ it. From the brilliant mind of Mr. Clarence Reid (aka Blowfly), these guys were his backup band according to the little I could find about them.
5- Dennis Landry - Concentration (Soul Unlimited)
Serious wah wah action on this Louisiana B side instrumental. The man’s got that foot well rooted on that pedal. Unique compared to the rest of the funk coming out of the state at the time.
Middle “Turtle”
6-Todd Rundgren - Tic Tic Tic It Wears Off (Bearsville)
From his most eccentric LP “A Wizard, A True Star”, a great little transition crammed in between some seriously disturbing mind frying stuff.
7-Brother Jack Mc Duff - Hunk O’ Funk (Blue Note)
Now two back to back hammond monster tunes by two guys with strange scottish last names. Far away stays the Haggis (thankfully) and in comes the sweaty funk. yes.
8-Jimmy McGriff - The Bird (Capitol 45)
The title of the album from which this 45 was extracted says it all “Groove Grease”.
9-Magnum - Composition Seven (Phoenix)
Best for last? Maybe...Criminally tagged to a B side truly a Doll’s House in itself with latin, jazz, funk, cowbell galore, congas and some strange sounding synths towards the end (don’t leave before that!). This one is a grower.
Outro “What seems to be the problem?”

your n° 1 record: alejandro from la colmena de humo

Photobucket

I feel very honored that DJ Blueprint asked me to do this little piece as I am always checking on his blog for great records and overall original stuff. I knew it was going to be hard to decide on a Number 1 record. The only way to solve this was to think in terms of what is my favorite record now.

I tend to give personal categories to records in their ability to evoke a mood. There are "dawn" records and "humid" records and (my favorite category of all) there are "rainy" records. Among those rainy records my favorite one is this one: Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum and Durr's "You Can't Blame Me" in the Capsoul label. Even before the voices start with the beautiful sound of the vibes there is already this air of melancholy in place, ready for the heartbreak. There are lots of great moments in this 45 but especially that little guitar bridge where it goes into some pretty amazing chord changes (wait for it at 2:10 min into it). It's such a rich arrangement with the harmonies and the congas and the vibes and that funky guitar backing that it is really hard to understand why this wasn't a hit.

You can really feel the great care and love this guys put into this piece of music. They knew they had something special in their hands. Unfortunately the world at large ignored it, but lucky us that have that brief moment in time captured in wax. No wonder why it is called Soul...

That's why I love this record and I hope you will too.

Many thanks to DJ Blueprint and the mighty This Is Tomorrow for inviting me. I hope you will all stop also by my blog for some more sweet sounds,

See ya!

your n° 1 record: double k from parkdale funk

Photobucket

When Blueprint first asked me to pick my number one 45 or LP of all time, I had a million different titles running through my mind. At first I was going through all my rare and unknown 45s hoping to stump everyone with something you’ve never heard before. However, that really wouldn’t represent what this series is all about and sometimes the best things aren’t always hard to find. I thought to myself, if I was stuck on an island and I could only bring one album with me what would it be? “Enter The Wu Tang Clan: 36 Chambers” came to mind, however I definitely have to go with Syl Johnson’s “Is It Because I’m Black” LP.

I first got introduced to Syl when I was listening to Wu-Tang's “Hollow Bones” (off the W album). I’ve always been impressed by Rza’s production, but this one song was flawless, I just loved it. I went out and got the single because I really wanted the instrumental and ended up listening to it over and over again. I never felt so much emotion off an instrumental before; I just had to know where this sample came from. After some digging around I found out that it came from Syl Johnson and the title song to the “Is It Because I’m Black” album. I got myself a copy and since then Syl has been my number one singer, songwriter, arranger and producer.

“Is it Because I’m Black” is often referred to as one of the best soul albums to come out of Chicago, but I need to correct that – it’s one of the best albums to ever come out. This is more than just a music album, it’s also a history lesson. Syl takes you on a lyrical journey all while keeping the production fly, soulful and funky. This album is so amazing on so many different levels.

Here are a few cuts off the album, I hope you’ll enjoy.

del the funky homosapien - funk man: the stimulus package

Photobucket

Funk Man: The Stimulus Package marks Del the Funky Homosapien's 14th project as he has been in this hip-hop game for almost two decades. Starting at the tender age of 17 as protégé to his cousin, Ice Cube, Del quickly rose to the top of the underground hip hop scene with his albums, I Wish My Brother George Was Here (1991) and No Need for Alarm (1993), both released through Elektra Records. Soon after parting ways with the label, Del joined the Hieroglyphics family, comprised of notable emcees Pep Love, the Souls of Mischief, Casual, and Domino. In 1998 the critically acclaimed album 3rd Eye Vision was the first to be released under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label and since then Del has had consistent success with his solo and joint efforts, including Deltron 3030 (2000), Gorillaz (2001), Full Circle (2003), and Eleventh Hour (2008) to name a few.

your n° 1 record: vincent from fufu stew

Photobucket

Hello, kiddies.

The task of picking that one record that floors me every time I play it is quite the challenge. With so many different facets of music that I enjoy at different points in time, answering the question of what my all time favourite record is and why is damn near impossible. However, for the sake of sharing one of my most cherished pieces with you all, I will choose a rather significant record. Now this is a significant record for two reasons. First because the band are from my hometown, and second because this was the first Funk 45 I ever purchased, long before I actually got serious about collecting Funk 45s. Strangely enough, I was more interested in buying oldies reissues about ten years ago. The shop I used to frequent at the time was the premier place to find such things. One day I was doing the usual digging and happened across Blow Your Mind from the Sound Experience.

Here's a nice blurb on the band, thanks as always to the All Music guide...

Sound Experience was a tight, hard-driving funk ensemble with a flair for up-tempo grooves and aggressive, mind-bending guitar work drenched in fuzz and wah-wah effects. Composed of lead vocalist Arthur Grant, Leroy Frailing, Johnny Groman, Gregory Holmes, James Lindsey, Melvin Miles, Anton Scott, and Reginald Wright, the rather large group formed at Baltimore's Morgan State (University) in 1970 and quickly built a local following. During the early '70s, the group hooked up with producer Stan Watson and his Philly Groove/Soulville labels, and moved to Philadelphia to record with him. Early sides like "40 Acres and a Mule" and "Blow Your Mind" displayed the influence of early Funkadelic, but by the time of their first album, 1974's Don't Fight the Feeling, their sound was a bit smoother around the edges. The title cut was a minor hit, and "Devil With the Bust" became an oft-sampled breakbeat classic in the years to come; other singles included "You've Broken My Heart" and 1975's "Boogie Woogie." Although their recorded output was limited, Sound Experience enjoyed an enduring cult following among funk collectors; Collectables issued the career overview The Soulville Collection on CD in 1994 (available here for pennies on the dollar), and acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson used the track "J.P. Walk" in his adult-film saga Boogie Nights.

As always, I am proud to be able to contribute to the This Is Tomorrow experience. Thanks again and again for the invite. Enjoy, have fun(k) and as always, please be safe.

Peace and blessings.

your n° 1 record: jopparelli from music selections

Photobucket

Hi everybody, this is Joppa AKA Arthur Jopparelli, representing with my man Marty for our blog: Martini & Jopparelli's Music Selections. I'm very glad our friend DJ Blueprint invited me to write about my number one record on his unique site. What I like in this site is the variety, Blueprint selects a lot of good sounds and inspirations from around the world, and gives warm hospitality to a lot of talented people. I'm honoured to contribute one more time with something different and -i hope- good for ya.

Well, my number one record is a dance single from 1982 by legendary producer Tee Scott (discogs)

First thing first, I love it because it's one of my first records. I found it by chance diggin in one of those "one dollar all" crates in a record shop, where you find the unexpected stuff, you know what i'm sayin? (well actually it was "5000 Lire" crate back in the days, here in Italy). Anyway, i picked it up, saw the group name "Brooklin Express" and the release date and place, New York 1982. So I gave it a quick listen and found out that record was straight bangin! From day one, this record never left my DJ bag when playing around, and every time i play it still works great.

Some years after buying it, something like 8 years later, I went to see Richard Dorfmeister and Jazzanova in a club in Milan and....surprise...they played it! Nobody in the club knew what it was because it's not a common track: nobody except me, smiling and dancing, so proud of my favourite record being played by superstar DJs!

A classic disco track, but very modern indeed, still playable after more than 20 years, this track is basically a remix of Jimmy Bo Horne "Spank". I chose the B-side "Change position", which is a different edit, like a upside-down turn of the main track, starting with a dope Moroder-inspired synth bassline and then introducing the main theme with crazy sirens. Hope you like it!

Peace
Jopparelli

el michels affair - enter the 37th chamber

Photobucket

El Michels Affair, at the core of the retro-soul and funk movement, is led by saxophonist/organist Leon Michels and producer/engineer Jeff Silverman. The group began as a series of informal collaborative sessions with musicians from top-selling acts Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Budos Band, and Antibalas. In 2005, the group released their debut effort, Sounding Out The City on Truth & Soul, a label co-founded by Silverman and Michels. Since the album's '05 release, the El Michels sound has been prominent on successful collaborations with Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Just Blaze, Adele, and Iggy Pop. Furthermore, in 2007, a horn part written and performed by Leon Michels was lifted and used for Jay-Z's "Roc Boys," the lead single from the American Gangster album. Most famously, however, is El Michels 2007 tour with Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon, which led to the recording of two widely successful 7" instrumental singles for "C.R.E.A.M." and "Bring Da Ruckus." Since then, El Michels Affair has diligently been in the studio, interpreting fifteen of some of the most legendary and well-know Wu-Tang Clan songs, including "Can It All Be So Simple," "Protect Ya Neck," "Cherchez La Ghost," and "Incarcerated Scarfaces" for their upcoming sophomore album, Enter the 37th Chamber, due in stores on April 21st via Fat Beats Records.

kero one - early believers

Photobucket

Former web designer by day and rapper/producer/DJ by night, Kero One,
stands as a true testament to the do-it-yourself success story. His
early career was marked by endless hours of researching, cold calling,
and networking to gain exposure for his debut, self produced project
Windmills of the Soul. Persistence paid off with a little help from fate
when one of the 50 copies of his album was picked up in a tiny record
store in Tokyo, Japan. Success was immediate, as Windmills of the Soul
became a hit overnight, which opened the floodgates for international
touring and performance opportunities.

Three years later, after a Best Hip Hop Album of 2006 award and collabos
with Talib Kweli and Mark Farina, Kero One is back with his sophomore
album entitled Early Believers. Modulating from soulful jazz tinged
tracks to upbeat synth-driven party bangers, Kero One features some his
favorite vocalists such as Giles Peterson protegé UK singer Ben
Westbeech, Finland's answer to modern soul Tuomo, and Portland's Ohmega
Watts. Early Believers will be released in April 2009, just in time for
spring cleaning and summer fun.

your n° 1 record: mr. double down from the hook and sling

Photobucket

I was very flattered to be asked by Dj Blueprint to contribute to this series, as This Is Tomorrow is always one of my first points of call when checking out my fellow bloggers on the circuit.

Being asked to come up with your favourite 45 is a pretty difficult task as I'm sure anyone who collects seriously will agree. Once you clock past a certain amount of records and music that a 'normal' person might have, it verges on near impossible as the permutations become endless.

I have opted today for the 45 that had been the hardest in terms of time and money spent to finally cross off of my wants list. 'Dap Walk' by Ernie And The Top Notes Inc. on the Fordom label was a record I first heard Keb Darge spin at his 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Madame JoJo's in Soho many years back. It's one of those records that make hairs on the back of your neck stand up and I immediately knew I had to track down and own an original copy. Being pretty rare I knew this wouldn't be easy and it was several months later that one finally showed up on Ebay. Not willing to let it go I splurged a decent three figured sized wedge and finally secured my copy after an agonizing week waiting to see if it would show up in the post!

In musical terms it is a near perfect example of up front deep funk and even the small imperfections such as the squeak of Ernie Vincents guitar pedal being picked up by the mikes make it even more endearing. I dropped an article over at my Blog The Hook And Sling here which also includes a great live video as well as some other points of interest about the 45.

Enjoy the cut and remember that saying "They just don't make music like this anymore" couldn't ring truer with this 45!!

eddie floyd - i've never found a girl (to love me like you do)

Photobucket

one of the premier southern soul men of the sixties, eddie floyd began his carreer in a group called the falcons
in the mid 60s eddie floyd signed a writer's contract with the stax label, where he co-wrote one of wilson picketts' greatest hits, 634-5789 (soulsville U.S.A.), with steve cropper
the pairing of floyd with steve cropper resulted in many, many great songs including eddie's biggest hit, knock on wood
knock on wood was just the third stax single to hit number one on the r&b charts although it was just intended to be a demo to be presented to otis redding
later on floyd began writing songs with booker t. jones and this sweet soul 45 is one of them
co-written with al bell, the multi-instrumentalist jones played everything but the drums on this track and later wrote out string arrangements and directed the players
i never found a girl (to love me like you do) went to number two on the r&b charts

from the early 50s to the early 60s hank ballard was the lead vocalist of one of the most popular and commercially succesful vocal groups, the midnighters
hank ballard wrote one of the midnighters' first major hits called work with me annie in 1954
in 1959 he wrote a song called the twist which was released as a b side, while chubby checker's cover version of the song went to number 1 on the pop charts just one year later
in my opinion, this is one of the baddest grooves the jb's family recorded
the song started as the backing track to marva whitney's i made a mistake because it's only you and was also included on james brown's ain't it funky album as after you done it

your n°1 record: dave from heavysoulbrutha.com

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The crazy thing is I only very recently discovered Dyke And The Blazers. I remember hearing the "Some people don't like the way Sally walk" bit in the Stetsasonic song called "Sally" back in 1988 and never knew it came from the original sound of Dyke. I'm pretty sure I first heard Dyke's version on a blog mix and it was like BLAMMO! After all these years, that's where that sample came from? Of course I went on a mission to find any and all Dyke records and was just amazed at the massive amounts of FUNK and SOUL that the short lived group put out. I've only been collecting 45's for a few years now and this is by far my favourite. Not just because of the sample discovery, but it's just simply a BADDASS record. If it's familiar to you, you'll no doubt know what I'm talking about. If not, get ready for the FUNK BLAST of "Let A Woman Be A Woman-Let A Man Be A Man!"

Big thanks to Blueprint, not only for his great spot here, but for kindly inviting me in. DIG IT!

Peace and SOUL,

chris read - the diary 1.5 (20 years of the remix)

Whilst the practice of releasing mixtapes between albums to maintain relevance has become a common practice in recent years, British DJ and producer, Chris Read is turning tradition on its head and releasing what some might describe as an album between mixtape releases.

In January 2008, Chris Read released a mix album entitled ‘The Diary (World’s Greatest Rap Megamix)’, a stunningly intricate 800 track mix chronicling the genre’s landmark recordings in order of release from 1979 to 2007. Quick to gain support from many of the world’s best respected DJs and taste makers (including Andy Smith (Portishead), DJ Food (Ninja Tune), Ollie Teeba (Herbaliser), DJ Format, Plus One (Scratch Perverts) and DJ Yoda), the mix was described by some as one of the greatest hip hop mix albums of all time. With tens of thousands of downloads and radio broadcasts in over 30 countries, the mix has achieved cult status and continues to receive attention via the web.

Just over a year later, with work on ‘The Diary Volume 2’ underway, Chris is releasing ‘The Diary Volume 1.5 (20 Years of The Remix)’, a tribute to the innovations in production and beat making over the last two decades. In just under 80 minutes Chris sets about selecting and remixing one iconic track from each of the last 20 years, in each case paying tribute to the production style and trends in sampling popular at the time of the original release.

From the James Brown influenced sound popularised by the likes of Hurby Luv Bug and 45 King in the late ‘80s, to the jazz sampling trends of the early to mid ‘90s, to the iconic and distinct sounds of DJ Premier and Jay Dee, all the cornerstones of the genre’s development are touched upon. The result is an impressive collection of tracks that might easily be mistaken for lost or unreleased remixes from some of the genre’s greats.

detroit is best known for the motown sound but after the success of motown there were thousands of young musicians in detroit looking for jobs
dave hamilton was maybe the most famous producer/musician, well known for his dirty fuzzed out deep funk tunes and his sweet soul
originally released in 1975 this album features soulful jazz grooves played by lyman woodard, who began his career playing the piano but switched to organ after hearing jimmy smith, plus norma bell (alt sax), lorenzo brown (percussion), ron english (electric guitar, bass), leonard king (drums, vocals), charles moore (triangle) and bud spangler (percussion)
in full cooperation with lyman woodard and strata records, the fine people at wax poetics have remastered the original tapes for a 2 lp vinyl re-release of this sought after gem, so now you don't have to spend $200 for a beat-up copy

apparently he decided to start a comeback after hearing his hit, is it because i'm black, being sampled by hip hop artists in the mid 90's

your n°1 record: red kelly from the b side, the a side, soul detective

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Back in the mid-eighties, Guralnick's "Sweet Soul Music" had just come out, and I read it like it was the Bible or something. Right around the same time, Rounder released "Soul Alive", and Solomon Burke became my new hero. I went to see him whenever he came to New York, and he never failed to just knock me out.

There was a woman who sold any number of things from a cafeteria table set up on 7th Avenue, right in the middle of everything. Sometimes, among all the clutter, would be a pile of 45s she had picked up somewhere. We got to be friends, Laura and I, and somehow it seemed she always had just what I needed. When I saw this single there on the table one day, I couldn't believe my eyes. I took it home and put it in my jukebox (where it remains to this day). It is so incredibly GOOD, that I still can't imagine why it was relegated to the B side. Cut at American Sound in the studio's absolute prime, with Reggie Young and the rest of The Memphis Boys just killing it, the unbelievably talented Atlantic Soul team of Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd took a little known Joe Tex song and turned it into a masterpiece.

My girlfriend at the time just loved this song, and played it to death on the jukebox whenever she was at my house. That should have tipped me off... By 1993, she and I were engaged, and, unbeknownst to me, she cooked up a plan with Solomon one night backstage at a club in New York, and the Bishop of Soul married us during his show that same night.

That was sixteen years ago... this is one special record.

The Harder They Come (1972) - Island

Picking one record out of all the timeless ones is pretty close to mission impossible. It becomes more a question of which is the one record which means the most to you, helped you get over heart-break, awkwardness of your teenage years and so on... I'll start with the runner-up: listening to A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" (cassette of course) as a 13 year old pretty much defined what musical path I would take after. So, that's definetly my teenage years defining record.

The overwhelming winner however is and always will be the soundtrack to "The Harder They Come". It is pretty much the first record I remember listening to as a kid and if that doesn't steer you on the right path musically, I don't know what will. My uncle made me listen to this record when I was about 8 and it's all I would listen to in this giant walkman that weighed about 15 pounds and was about half my leg.

The album has 12 tracks (but 2 of them are there twice! always found that hillarious) and pretty much 8 of the 10 tracks are stone cold classics! 2 of the Jimmy Cliff tracks ("Many rivers to cross" and "The Harder they come") are the kind of songs you send into space and hope that someone green finds it. Its pretty damn close to some of the best things the human race can come up with. (Apart from the pyramids and hmm... Corn Dogs!) After that you have some of the most classic roots reggae and ska tracks out there, "Draw your breaks" (Scotty), "Rivers of Babylon" (The Melodians), "Shanty Town" (Desmond Dekker), "Pressure Drop" (Toots & the Maytals).

So come to think of it picking my favorite record of all time was pretty damn easy. The Harder they come. Hands down. Big time credit is due to my uncle for introducing me to it…

little ann - going down a one way street (the wrong way)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

going down a one way street was written and produced by dave hamilton who recorded hundreds maybe thousands of songs
this seems to be ann bridgeforth's only release, although an acetate was discovered in the early 90's and so the song was later released on ace records after they bought the rights to dave hamilton's recordings
unfortunately ann died in 2003 due to kidney failure

the founders - i don't want a second hand love

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i bought this next 45 at a friend's house who had a record shop selling vinyl which closed at the beginning of the 90's
he still has stacks and stacks of records and while i was digging through all the 80's crap i found a pile of soul 45's
i bought the whole lot for 0.50 euro each and realised a few weeks later that i found some pretty rare 45's
this one sells for about 50-75 euros and seems to be pretty tough to find
